Working Together for a Safe and Just Elder Community
Elder Abuse
Everyone deserves to live a life free from abuse. We all have a role to play in ensuring the safety of our most vulnerable community members.
Silent Epidemic
According to national estimates, only 1 in 10 cases of elder abuse is reported.
Why?
Seniors may fear repercussions or be living with cognitive impairment.
Professionals may lack training or fear making a wrong report.
In Rhode Island
In 2023, Rhode Island’s Office of Healthy Aging initiated 1,531 investigations of elder abuse. Because elder abuse is underreported, it is likely the number of elder abuse investigations in R.I. could have been over 15,000.
By 2030, 1 in 4 Rhode Islanders will be over 65. Let’s value and protect our older adults.
Workforce Training & Support
Direct service workers and law enforcement are at the front-lines in contact with elders. The RI Coalition for Elder Justice’s core mission includes training the workforce to better recognize and respond to elder abuse.
